Visual Arts in Europe (EVA)
An Open History
The purpose of this academic and editorial project is to publish both a high-quality, widely illustrated book and a website comprising more comprehensive content documenting the general history of the visual arts on a European scale. EVA is affiliated with RIHA, the international association of Research Institutes in the History of Art. Its geographical horizon are the member countries of the Council of Europe and the chronology spans from prehistoric art to contemporary creations.
The publication will be centered on around 500 objects selected by the participating teams and compiled through an international dialogue. The selected works represent all artistic genres, including architecture, the applied arts, and the graphic arts. The project’s main objective consists in rethinking European art history with a transnational, non-essentialist approach. It aims to make a both original and critical contribution to the public debates about notions such as “identity”.
