John Scheid
Guest Professor
From 2019 until 2022, John Scheid, an international renowned ancient historian, was guest professor at the Institute for History.
Professor Scheid is a leading expert in the field of ancient religion, institutions and society of ancient Rome and archaeology of religion. For 15 years, he was professor at the prestigious Collège de France. Here, he was also responsible for the international relations. Furthermore, he directed and coordinated several international excavations in Italy and Tunisia. Since 2016, John Scheid is professeur honoraire at the Collège de France and member of the renowned Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres. He is the author, resp. coauthor of 19 books, more than 100 book chapters and about 70 papers in international scientific journals. In 2000, he was awarded the “Prix Saintour de l’Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres” and in 2015 the “Prix Emile Girardeau de l’Académie des sciences morales et politiques”. He received the honorary doctorate of the Universities of Erfurt and of Chicago and he is fellow of several important international scientific institutions, such as the German Archaeological Institute, the British Academy or the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. John Scheid is also well acquainted with the historical and archaeological research in Luxembourg. He is Membre honoraire de l’Institut grand-ducal (Histoire) and Membre correspondant de l’Institut grand-ducal (Philosophie, droit et sciences politiques), Luxembourg.
